Zig Zag ZEN by Allan Badiner

Buddhism and psychedelic exploration share a common concern: the liberation of the mind. This new edition of Zig Zag Zen: Buddhism and Psychedelics has substantially evolved from the landmark anthology that launched the first serious inquiry into the moral, ethical, doctrinal, and transcendental considerations of the intersection of Buddhism and psychedelics. A provocative and thoughtful exploration of inner states and personal transformation, Zig Zag Zen now includes an expanded display of stunning artwork from Android Jones, Sukhi Barber, Randal Roberts, Luke Brown and Ang Tsherin Sherpa, and more work by the pioneering visionary artist Alex Grey. Complementing these new images are original essays by such luminaries as Ralph Metzner and Brad Warner; exciting interviews with James Fadiman, Kokyo Henkel, and Rick Doblin; and a discussion of ayahuasca's unique influence on Zen Buddhism by David Coyote (six new text contributions in total); all of which have been carefully curated to extend the original inquiry of authors Joan Halifax Roshi, Peter Matthiesen, Jack Kornfield, Terence McKenna, Rick Fields and many others. Contemporary seekers of spiritual truth know that both Buddhism and psychedelics are inevitably subjects encountered along the journey. By examining them together, the reader can discover truth about the essence of each.

Zig Zag Zen is a must read for anyone who is concerned about the future of Buddhist practice” –Tenzin Bob Thurman, chair of Indo-Tibetan studies at Columbia University

“An extraordinary ride and guide down the corridors of the mystical psychedelic inward journey that will be of great interest and value to any serious explorer of spiritual insight. The zigzag is not for the straight and narrow.” –Ganga White, author of Yoga Beyond Belief and founder of White Lotus Foundation

Zig Zag Zen: Buddhism and Psychedelics is a fun, historical exploration of the divergent viewpoints and experiences of many extremely bright people who–like the Buddha–carry the intention of exploring human consciousness with the goal of allaying suffering.” –Ira Israel, Huffpost

Artist and author Alex Grey is best known for his visionary paintings that integrate the anatomical body with the transcendental light of the soul. His work brings together the paths of science, creativity, and spirituality. Grey's paintings, sculpture, and performances have been honored exhibitions in Sao Paulo Biennial, the Grand Palais in Paris, Venice, and at the American Visionary Art Museum, the New Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego. Tool, Beastie Boys, Nirvana, SCI, and David Byrne have featured Grey's work as album art. WorldSpirit, a spoken word piece, drew over a thousand people when performed in Oakland, California, and is available as both a CD and DVD. Grey's artworks are chronicled in the monographs, Sacred Mirrors: The Visionary Art of Alex Grey (published in six languages), Transfigurations, and in his pictorial philosophical text, The Mission of Art.

The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, CoSM, a long-term exhibition of fifty works of Grey's transformative art, was co-founded by Allyson and Alex Grey in 2004 in New York City. In 2007 the Greys co-authored CoSM, a photographic book tour of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors. It is at CoSM that Grey has shared many of the poems collected now in Art Psalms. Alex lives in New York City with his wife, the painter Allyson Grey, and their daughter, the actress Zena Grey.
