Ziva doesn't think she needs other people. She doesn't like being told what to do. All she wants is to feel safe, except she's a magnet for trouble.

Captured by Gadianton and forced into servitude Ziva is strapped with an unlikely companion, causing the danger to increase. When the robbers who captured her are killed off, she's left alone and destitute, with an infant that's not hers, in an unfamiliar forest, continuously hunted by others. She fights for survival on her search for safety and acceptance.

Along the way Ziva encounters some students and their teacher who include her and the baby in their group, protecting them for a time from other Gadianton robbers. She wonders if her acquaintances will be able to tolerate the risk, or will they want her to leave before death comes. Because she fails to follow the instructor's one rule, she gets a husband she barely knows.

Her new husband is impressed by the lone woman's ability to remain alive despite the constant threat. He decides to help her even if she fights him every step of the way. He does everything he can to keep this woman and her companion safe. Can he convince her that the only way they will survive is to believe in one another and work together? Can he gain Ziva's trust? Can he ultimately win her heart?
