The Zuni Man-Woman by Will Roscoe
The Zuni Man-Woman focuses on the life of We'wha (1849-96), the Zuni who was perhaps the most famous berdache (an individual who combined the work and traits of both men and women) in American Indian history. Through We'wha's exceptional life, Will Roscoe creates a vivid picture of an alternative gender role whose history has been hidden and almost forgotten.Will Roscoe has been involved in the homosexual movement since 1975, when he assisted in the founding of Lambda, Montana's first gay/lesbian group. With the No on 6 campaign against the Briggs Initiative, he collaborated with Harvey Milk. He collaborated extensively with the Gay American Indians (GAI) on concerns surrounding the definition of the term berdache and served as the coordinating editor for the GAI's anthology of nonfiction essays and short tales, Living the Spirit: A Gay American Indian Anthology. The Zuni Man-Woman, Roscoe's debut book, won the Lambda Literary Prize for gay men's nonfiction as well as the Margaret Mead Award. In 2003, he earned the Monette-Horwitz Achievement Prize for homophobia research and study.
