Psychoanalytic Theory Summary

Psychoanalytic Theory: An Introduction by Anthony Elliott

Anthony Elliott presents a comprehensive introduction to psychoanalytic theory and its applications in the social sciences and humanities in this new and fully revised second edition of Psychoanalytic Theory. Elliott provides lucid interpretations of key psychoanalytic theorists such as Freud, Klein, Winnicott, Lacan, Deleuze, Kristeva, and Zizek. This revised edition has much new material, including a survey of psychoanalytic approaches to race and postcolonialism from Fanon to Homi Bhabha, as well as a look at the reframing of sexuality studies by such feminist theorists as Judith Butler, Helene Cixous, and Luce Irigaray. The book follows major themes, highlighting the similarities and differences among influential thinkers and schools of thought. At the same time, Psychoanalytic Theory is structured so that the chapters can be read in any order. Each one includes an introductory overview and summary, as well as biographical and historical material for each theorist discussed. This book is an essential starting point for any exploration of the contribution of psychoanalysis to contemporary theory.

Psychoanalytic Theory Reviews

Anthony Elliott has rapidly established himself as a major writer in the field of psychoanalysis and social theory. In this new edition of Psychoanalytic Theory, he offers a masterful tracing of key psychoanalytic ideas and shows how they arise from, and feed back into, some of the central cultural concerns of our time. ---Stephen Frosh, Professor of Psychology, Birkbeck College, University of London Anthony Elliott understands psychoanalysis on its own terms. He also understands contemporary societies and that the study of these societies must focus on the intersection of the unconscious and the social. Elliott's comprehensive treatment of various psychoanalytic traditions and the more recent critical revisions of such traditions by feminist theorists is a gift for scholars in social science and the humanities. Surely, Psychoanalytic Theory is an excellent example of social studies across borders. I love teaching the book and both undergraduates and graduates find the book engaging and informative.---Patricia Clough, Professor of Sociology and Women's Studies, City University of New York
