Human Physiology Summary

Human Physiology: The Mechanisms of Body Function by Arthur J. Vander (Professor Emeritus, University of Michigan, USA)

The new edition of this physiology text has been written to teach the functions of the human body from a mechanistic approach, and it stresses homeostatic and control systems. The mechanistic approach explains physiology as a dynamic process of chains of causal links rather than just stating facts and events. The sections on signal transduction mechanisms have been simplified, to emphasize the basic principles. Each chapter contains colour-coded flow charts which review the important material, and there are also an increased number of summary tables. The coverage of exercise physiology has been revised, as have the sections on genetics: these now include the human genome project, transcription factors and gene cloning.

Table of Contents

A framework for human physiology. Part one: basic cell functions; chemical composition of the body; cell structure; protein activity and cellular metabolism; genetic information and protein; movement of molecules across cell membranes. Part two: biological control systems; homeostasis mechanisms and cellular communications; neural control mechanisms; the sensory systems; principals of the hormonal control system; muscle; control of body movement; consciousness and behaviour. Part three: co-ordinated body functions; circulation; respiration; the kidneys and regulation of water and inorganic ions; the digestion and absorbtion of food; regulation of organic metabolism, growth and energy balence; reproduction; defence mechanisms of the body.
