Technological Mechanics of Porous Bodies Summary

Technological Mechanics of Porous Bodies by B. Druyanov

This mathematical account of the mechanics of porous bodies looks at how porous bodies undergo irreversible deformations in which the particles or powders in the body rearrange. This is important in the technology of forming components from powders, and the theoretical understanding of certain phenomena is of practical importance (e.g. waves of densification encountered in non-stationary compacting). Other processes considered include cold compacting in a closed mould, the HIP process, and sintering in non-uniform temperature and stress fields. Simple models of real systems are employed so that the solutions are on the one hand explicit, and on the other hand, reflect real features induced by the compressibility of porous bodies. The interaction of external applied conditions and the internal densification caused by surface tension effects in sintering is examined, and the resulting model applied to sintering in non-uniform temperature and stress fields.

Table of Contents

Part 2 Initial and boundary-value problems, extremum theorems and discontinuities: initial and boundary-value problems; the laws of external friction of plastic bodies; extremum theorems for boundary-value problems of non-stationary flow; the theorem on the minimum property of the actual velocity field for boundary-value problems of stationary flow; discontinuous solutions. Part 3 Properties of the equations of two-dimensional flows: compatibility relationships; boundary-value problems under an arbitrary yielding condition; properties of the equations of two-dimensional flows under the pyramidal yielding. Part 4 Compacting: compacting in a closed smooth mould; isostatic pressing of a porous plastic material. Part 5 Reduction, extrusion and rolling: the behaviour of a porous material under moderate values of the mean stress; reduction of cylinders; extrusion; rolling of a strip of porous material. Part 6 Theoretical foundations of densification at elevated temperature: foundations of visco-plasticity; a model of viscous compressible material; densification of a porous material in a non-uniform temperature field; hot isostatic pressing in a non-uniform temperature field. Part 7 Continuum theory of rigid-phase sintering: constitutive equations; sintering of a plate in a non-uniform temperature field; sintering of porous bodies containing isolated macro-defects.
