'Dime Westerns' were tremendously popular reading in nineteenth-century America, and are currently of major interest to literary scholars. Three of the best-known dime westerns are reprinted here, along with a substantial introduction giving the historical and cultural background to help students understand their mass appeal and their relationship to classic nineteenth-century American literature.
