Carl D. Martland is a transportation consultant and a research affiliate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has taught undergraduate and graduate classes on project evaluation, transportation systems, and freight transportation management. His research has addressed many aspects of rail systems performance, including life-cycle costing for track, technology assessment, equipment utilization, operations planning, terminal design, and service reliability. As a consultant, he has worked with all the major railroads in North America; numerous local, state, and federal agencies; the World Bank; and railroads and transportation agencies in a dozen countries in Europe, Asia and South America. The author of seven award-winning papers, he was honored in 1998 as the recipient of the "Outstanding Researcher Award" from the Transportation Research Forum in recognition of his lifetime contributions to transportation research.
