Both Byron and Shelley died young. By the time Byron left Harrow, almost half his life was over; and when Shelley left Eton, three-fifths of his life was gone. Ian Gilmour has concentrated on the two poets in their youth, and tells their stories in tandem. Their formative years had a decisive influence on the later lives of them both. An an historian, Gilmour provides an interesting account of the political, social and economic background to their writings. About Ian Gilmour

Ian Gilmour has been a barrister, journalist, politican and writer. He edited the Spectator from 1954 to 1959, was a Conservative MP from 1962 to 1992, and is now in the House of Lords. He was Secretary of State for defence in Edward Heath's government, and Lord Privy Seal and deputy Foreign Secretary at the beginning of Mrs Thatcher's. He has long been immersed in the poetry and lives of Byron and Shelley, and has been working on ideas for this book for many years. His previous books include Riot, Risings and Revolution, a history of violence in 18th - century England; Dancing with Dogma, an analysis of Britain under Thatcherism; Britain Can Work, an examination of laissez-faire economics; and The Body Politic, an historical account of the British constitution.
