International Trade Law Summary

International Trade Law by Indira Carr (University of Middlesex, UK)

At a time when developing countries such as India and China are emerging as key players in the provision of manufactured goods and services on the international scene an understanding of international trade law has become increasingly important for those studying and practising law, business, banking and finance. This textbook provides a comprehensive and informed analysis of the complexities of an international sale transaction and uses tables and diagrams wherever possible to aid students who may be unfamiliar with this often challenging area of law.

Focusing on international sales of goods and the various relations that arise as a result of a sale contract, this text looks at:

  • standard trade terms and the Convention on International Sales of Goods 1980
  • issues relating to Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and e-commerce, such as security
  • cargo transportation
  • insurance and payment issues
  • dispute resolution including mediation and arbitration.

With a suggested reading list and website listings for relevant legislation in each chapter, this book is essential reading for all students of international trade law, international commercial law, banking and finance, business studies and export management.

International Trade Law Reviews

Praise for previous editions; 'The book is well written with a useful index and is easy to follow. It is a vast improvement to some of the longer more turgid texts available for the practitioner in this important field, particularly for those readers without great familiarity in this area.' Trading Law and Trading Law Reports, Vol 15, No 3. 'The author stimulates the reader by often raising interesting questions which the courts have not yet answered ... One of the best features of Principles of International Trade is the clarity of expression of the author. She is easy to read and understand.' International and Comparative Law Quarterly, Vol 48, Oct 1999. 'Revised edition provides students with extracts from ninety documents, in their amended and updated form, which are usually mentioned in a course on international trade law. Includes statutes; statutory instruments; European Union materials; conventions; rules and model laws standard forms; and standard trading conditions. Contains material available as of April 1, 2003. Carr is reader in International Commercial Law at the University of Kent. Kidner is Professor of Law at the University of Wales.' Journal of Economic Literature, Vol 42, No. 3, September 2004.
