Fiction Core Collection Summary

Fiction Core Collection by John Greenfieldt

Recommends novels, novellas, and story collections - classic and contemporary - for the general adult audience.

Wilson's Fiction Core Collection (16th Edition, 2010) recommends novels, novellas, and story collections - classic and contemporary - for the general adult audience. The Collection also provides analytic entries for novellas and novels contained in composite works. All the works covered are either written in or translated into English. It is a guide to over 8,000 books (over xxx titles are new to this edition), plus review sources and other professional aids for librarians and media specialists. The best authors and their most widely read works in literary and popular fiction, old and new, are listed, including mysteries, science fiction, fantasy, Westerns, and romance. Titles are selected by librarians, editors, advisors, and nominators-all of them experts in fiction.

The collection is a valuable tool for collection development and maintenance, reader's advisory and curriculum support. Richly enhanced records provide a wealth of useful information. All entries include complete bibliographic data as well as price, subject headings, annotations, grade level, Dewey classification, cover art, and quotations from reviews. Many entries also list awards, best-book lists, and starred reviews.

  • Save Time: Efficiently organized and includes Starred titles
  • Save Money: Allocate your resources to the best materials available
  • Stay Relevant: New and emerging authors are featured
  • Complete Coverage: Includes recommendations on periodicals and electronic resources, too

Four-Year Subscription
This Core Collection is a four-year subscription. The newest edition, published January, 2010, delivers a library-bound volume with an extensive, selective list of recommended books. In 2011 Wilson published an extensive paperback supplement to the 2010 edition. Purchasers of the subscription will receive both immediately. During the next two years (through 2013) libraries receive two additional paperback supplements covering newly-published titles. All four years are only $275.

Uniquely Valuable
There is nothing quite like Wilson Core Collections. The accumulated expertise of our selectors, and the unquestioned reputation of these collections, is invaluable. Wilson Core Collections are universally recognized as impartial and expert aids to collection development that assist and reinforce the judgment of librarians everywhere. Selection to a Wilson Core Collection is strong support to any challenged purchase.

Other Key Features

  • A descriptive summary and, in most instances, an excerpt from a review conclude the entry. References are made from variant forms of authors' names, from names of joint authors, and from names of editors or compilers of short story collections.
  • Analytical entries, are identified by the word In, are made for parts of composite works. Analytical entries heighten the usefulness of Fiction Core Collection by expanding access to the library's collections.
  • Title and Subject Index. Each book is listed under title, followed by the name of the author under which the entry for the book will be found. You can also find books listed under their main subjects or themes, and under headings for genre, form, or literary technique, with specific headings for persons, places, events, historical periods, lifestyles, and legendary characters. Subject headings and subject cross references are printed in capital letters.
