Introduction to Psychoneuroimmunology Summary

Introduction to Psychoneuroimmunology by Jorge H. Daruna (Ochsner Clinic Foundation, New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.A.)

Psychoneuroimmunology investigates the relationships between behavior, psychosocial factors, the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems, and disease. Each system affects the others, enhancing and/or inhibiting processes elsewhere in the body. Research in this field has grown tremendously in recent years as science better understands the checks and balances of these interdisciplinary systems and processes. Introduction to Psychoneuroimmunology provides the first introductory text for this complex field. Beginning with a discussion of immune system basics, Introduction to Psychoneuroimmunology explores endocrine-immune modulation, neuro-immune modulation, the relationship between stress, contextual change, and disease, as well as infection, allergy, immune activity and psychopathology, and immune function enhancement. This text provides a sound introduction to the field and will serve as a valuable overview to what is otherwise a complex interdisciplinary subject at the junction of molecular biology, genetics, the neurosciences, immunology, cell biology, endocrinology, pharmacology, biochemistry, and the behavioral sciences.

Introduction to Psychoneuroimmunology Reviews

The author's successful intent is to provide an introductory text for those interested in the scientific basis for an integrative approach to healthcare. The clearly written and illustrated 12 chapters detail the relationships between behavior, psychosocial factors, the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems, and disease. The volume begins with an interesting summmary of historical ideas about health and disease and proceeds to clarify immunology basics leading to discussion of endocrine-immune and neuroimmune modulation, the influence of stress, and the interaction of psychosocial stress with infection, allergy, cancer and autoimmunity. Immune activity and psychopathology and methods enlisted to enhance immune function are covered. --JOURNAL OF THE INTERNATIONAL NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL SOCIETY this book... does present a well-balanced sampling of material for someone who is new to the study of neuroendocrine-immune interactions. The twelve chapters that comprise this book are logically arranged for a introductory text in psychoneuroimmunology... Even for the experienced researcher in psychoneuroimmunology, there is some very interesting and perhaps not-so-well-known historical information presented... A very comprehensive index and an extensive glossary strengthen the ability of Introduction to Psychoneuroimmunology to serve as a textbook for a diverse group of students... this book could be effective in introducing fascinating and continually growing field of psychoneuroimmunology to a new group of scholars. --BRAIN, BEHAVIOR, AND IMMUNITY The book is well organized with each chapter suitably divided into sections and subsections... The glossary of terms is helpful... Overall, the strengths of the book are the author's intimate grasp of the biological intricacies of immune and edocrine system function and interconnection, and the emphasis throughOUt on the importance of context. The biological mechansims of how psychosocial variables influence disease progression are well articulated... this book should appeal to those wanting a deeper understanding of the biological underpinnings of PNI and a global perspective of a broad range of pertinent issues and diseases. --CANADIAN PSYCHOLOGY
