Tour de France Summary

Tour de France: An Illustrated History by Marguerite Lazell

Tour de France: An Illustrated History plots the extraordinary evolution of this great race: from its early beginnings and its pre-war rivalries, through to its post-war re-establishment. It will include the great conflicts between riders in the late 1940s and 1950s - such as Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali, Louison Bobet and Charly Gaul - and the emergence of cycling superstars from the 1960s and beyond who would go on to dominate eras of the race, legends such as Jacques Anquetil, Eddie Merckx, Greg Lemond, Miguel Indurain and modern-day hat-trick winner, Lance Armstrong. Covering every aspect of the Tour from the organisers, technological advances and scandals - such as the doping controversies that have beset the race from as early as 1911 - this book will be a comprehensive and complete history of what remains one of the world's greatest sporting events.

Tour de France Reviews

These are boom years for cycling. Even cycling in London no longer seems like the extreme sport it used to be, the pursuit of lone individuals with a highly developed death wish. Now everyone seems to own a bike, or be about to buy one, and last year 81m people watched the Tour de France on TV. So an interest in cycling and bike-related matters is now as mainstream as, for example, an interest in darts or snooker. This centenary history of the most famous bike race in the world is written by an expert on the subject, but designed to appeal to the sort of reader who does indeed just want to read about the race, or look at large full-colour photographs of cyclists, and is not actually training to participate.
