Basic Radar Analysis Summary

Basic Radar Analysis by Mervin Budge

This authoritative new resource presents fundamentals of radar analysis including the range equation, detection theory, ambiguity functions, antennas, receivers, SP, and chaff analysis for modern radars. This book addresses details behind the detection probability equations and origins radar engineers commonly use to perform signal processor analyses. This book consolidates discussions of receiver design and analysis and treats areas of digital receivers not commonly found in other books. Packed with details on how to perform radar range equation and detection analyses, RCS modeling, ambiguity function generation and antenna pattern generation. This book also includes detailed analyses of coherent and non-coherent integration, design and analysis of analog and digital receivers, stretch processor implementation and SAR signal processor implementation. This resource also covers Basic STAP implementation and analysis as well as SLC design and implementation. This book is accompanied by a MATLAB on CD. This new resource is intended as a text for a series of courses in radar and as a theory and practice reference for practicing radar engineers.

Basic Radar Analysis Reviews

There is a definite art in choosing a book title. While this book is concerned with the fundamentals of radar, it is not simplistic. Thus 'basic' in the title does somewhat undersell the contents. This is a quite large book, but the ambition was clearly to cover a large part of the subject of the theory of how radars function, which requires this length. Subjects are covered thoroughly and efficiently. There are some omissions, particularly airborne and space radars, and little on countermeasures or protection measures. These are sensible choices. This book will be a good undergraduate introduction to a large fraction of the very large subject of radar. It will also provide a most useful reference text as this is a well-organised and comprehensive assembly of the foundational facts and formulas of the subject of radar, with a useful bibliography at each point for those needing to delve further. I am happy to recommend this book as a good all-round radar resource. -- Malcolm Hodkin * Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, UK *
Basic Radar Analysis is a superb text for the aspiring radar engineer as well as an excellent reference for a practicing radar analyst and radar system developer. Budge and German's detailed explanations supplemented with governing electrical and electromagnetic equations comprehensively address radar subsystems and overall system performance calculations. -- Dr. Jay M. Loomis, Principal Research Scientist * Research Institute, UA Huntsville *
Basic Radar Analysis is a manageable treatment of the mathematics of Ground based radar systems. The authors lead you through the maths and cover the majority of modern techniques utilised in recent radar sensors, that is not covered as comprehensively in any other textbook. The authors include questions at the end of each chapter, for which I would like the answers as Mathcad or Matlab to have been included as part of the book. -- Richard Harris * BAE Systems *
A very handy presentation of the overall radar subject. I would recommend for the engineers who manage work in the radar area as well as for the designers so that the managers could have an appreciation of the complexity of the design problems. -- Frank Ingels, Professor Emeritus * Mississippi State University *
Dr. Budge and Mr. German have teamed up to produce a seminal treatment for an introduction to radar analysis with particular attention to the underlying mathematical derivations, complete with detailed and practical MATLAB scripts with copious comments to arm students and practicing engineers with the tools to apply to their individual projects. Numerous real-world example problems are solved to highlight the underlying relationships involved as well as illustrating the limits of any approximations necessary. At the end of each chapter there are numerous well-chosen questions for testing and challenging the level of learning achieved by students or to stimulate new approaches for the practicing engineer. An extensive bibliography follows for each chapter. Finally, each figure in the text has a corresponding MATLAB .m file on the CD that accompanies the book and is heavily commented to illustrate the rigor of the underlying mathematics. This book is truly a gem for both the budding radar analyst as well as a great resource for the seasoned analyst. -- Tom Baumbach, CTO * Dynetics *
