About Nancy Bonvillain

Dr. NANCY BONVILLAIN received her Ph.D. in anthropology from Columbia University in 1972, with specializations in linguistics and in Native American cultures. She has carried out fieldwork in the Navajo Nation in Arizona and extensive linguistic fieldwork at the Akwesasne Mohawk Reserve in Ontario/Quebec, beginning in 1969. There she began the efforts to develop materials for language maintenance programs, completing her dissertation (A Grammar of Akwesasne Mohawk) and working with community members on dictionaries and conversations.

Dr. Bonvillain has taught on the undergraduate and graduate levels in several universities including Michigan State University and the State University of New York at Stonybrook. She taught in the summer session of Columbia University from 1982 until 2008. She currently teaches anthropology and linguistics at Bard College at Simon's Rock where she is also the Director of the Tutoring and Writing Center.

Dr. Bonvillain has published numerous articles on topics in Mohawk linguistics and Iroquoian ethnohistory. She has written seventeen books in the North American Indian cultures and histories series published by Chelsea House. And she has written four textbooks published by Prentice-Hall, including Language, Culture, and Communication (currently in its 6th edition), Women and Men: Cultural Constructs of Gender (4th edition), Native Nations: Cultures and Histories of Native North America, and Cultural Anthropology (3rd edition in press).
