Postmodernism Summary

Postmodernism by Reverend Kevin O'Donnell

'Postmodernism' is the name given to a range of philosophical positions and aesthetic styles that have developed since the 1950s.

Underlying postmodernism is the belief that all human knowledge is limited and culturally conditioned. In this new title in the Lion Access Guides series, Kevin O'Donnell takes us on an enlightening tour of postmodernist philosophy - its origins and the main tenets of postmodernist ideas. His tour also takes in related subjects such as the arts, ethics, politics and theology.

Postmodernism Reviews

Postmodernism as a literary or philosophical term has been around for so long that it seems quite old-fashioned now, and it gets used in so many different contexts that the sceptical reader might be forgiven for wondering whether the term actually means anything very precise. Indeed, perhaps a typically postmodern definition of postmodernism is to say that it no longer means anything at all, or it means whatever you want it to mean, referring to eclectic architecture, for example, or to Derrida and deconstructionism. The author covers the usual topics clearly and concisely enough, and the publisher has pegged the price low. By no means the only introduction to the subject, but certainly extremely accessible to anyone seeking a clear introduction to a confusing subject.
