Swapna Haddow is the best-selling author and award-winning funny lady of over 20 books for younger readers. She has won the Sainsbury's Book Award and Sheffield Children's Award, and is the creator of Dave the Pigeon. Originally from the UK, Swapna now lives in New Zealand with her husband, son and dog Archie.
I absolutely loved the Meg and Mog series by Helen Nicoll and Jan Pieńkowski. I loved copying the illustrations and making Meg and Mog stories of my own.
I’m reading Make Believe: On Telling Stories to Children by Mac Barnett at the moment. It’s a brilliant book for adults about the wonder of children’s literature and the importance of writing for quality books for the next generation.
I love storytelling so I always go to books, movies, podcasts and music. I love a wander around an art gallery and a museum. Any place that is full of creativity always inspires creativity.
I love to thrift anything and everything. I’ve found some amazing furniture, clothing and jewellery from second hand shops. I love a treasure hunt, and thrifting is the ultimate treasure hunt.
Don’t be so hard on yourself. It’s OK to try and fail and try again. The future is going to be so special, and you are going to adopt the most wonderful dog—he’ll have one ear that goes up and one that goes down so you’ll know who to look for.
