Classic Stitches designer Stephanie Burnham has long delighted readers with her exquisite beadwork and she continues to do so in this lovely bookAs the title suggests there are one hundred beautiful pieces of jewellery featured in a variety of beading techniques. Clear photography accompanies each design and there are chapters on getting started and how to do the various beading techniques required, too. Instead of buying new costume jewellery to complement a new outfit, open this book and make yourself a beautiful piece. Handmade jewellery makes a delightful gift, too.

This book has really been thought about and it is obvious that a lot of time went into the planning to get it right. It is split into four sections; three are based around different necklace types - a classic length, choker and lariat. The projects also include brooches, bracelets and rings as well as earrings to match the necklaces. All the projects are supported by a detailed techniques section.

The first part of the book covers a variety of beading techniques for each type of necklace such as different types of beading, stringing and knotting, although the majority of the projects has a finished photo, clear step-by-step instructions, and an easy to follow diagram.

Whilst most of it is aimed at beginners, there are a few pices that are a little trickier (some involve a little bit of freeform peyote or bead embellishment) and these should keep the more advanced beader interested too. A whole range of different types of beads and colours have been used to keep each project just that little bit different from the last, and because of this, the book maintains a bright and fresh appeal that should suit a range of tastes from the younger audience through to a more traditional beader.

I found it a little tricky at first referring back to the techniques section, and for some of the more difficult project, I would recommend practicing the tecniques first before making the pieces but overall I really enjoyed this book.

Like so many beaders Stephanie Burnham's creative life started in another textile discipline. She took an Adult Education course entitled Art & Design in Embroidery and stayed on to take her City and Guilds in Embroidery. Stephanie was invited to teach at The Country Cross Stitcher and they are now in the 9th year of workshops for The Woburn School of Needlework. Here she teaches classes in both embroidery and beadwork from beginners to innovative and challenging techniques. Stephanie started beading quite unexpectedly whilst attending an Embroiderers Guild meeting in Letchworth and was hooked after about half an hour. Stephanie was thrilled to be chosen to teach as the Great British Bead Show held in Coventry.
