The book starts with three key techniques showing how to translate designs to fabric: drawing around a card template; stitching through a traced outline; and cutting templates out of stencil plastic. Then, the designs - a lifetime's worth of patterns from traditional, modern and heirloom to easy-to-follow geometric and figurative examples as well as both machine and hand-quilting ones - are organized by theme, so it is easier to find a pattern to suit every style of quilt. Where appropriate, the author shows where to position figurative designs in circular, square or triangular block to create the best effect, and for each design she explains how each example can be repeated and the percentage to enlarge the patterns. All this key data is succinctly presented in short notations accompanying each pattern, a feature of the book which allows the author to include as many stitch designs as are required to satisfy even the most avid enthusiast.

Luise Roberts was taught at an early age by her mother how to knit and sew. However, it was with a degree in graphic design and earning a living designing books, in particular several needlecraft books that rekindled her interest in quilting. With a new enthusiasm and fresh ideas, she is keen to convey this passion to others. Luise lives in London.
