He came to New York City at the age of 27 and worked as a trim carpenter in Manhattan for five years before writing his first Joe Dante novel, Mid-Town South, in 1985. His publisher persuaded him to make his protagonist into a series character once that game was a commercial success. Following that, eight more Joe Dante novels were published, all of which made various national best seller lists. The Mystery Writers of America nominated Mid-Town North, which was published in 1991, for an Edgar Allan Poe Award.
At the request of the estate, Newman finished Chains of Command, which had been left unfinished when best-selling author William Caunitz died in 1998. It was named a Notable Book of the Year by the New York Times in 1999.
