8000 Years of Ornament by Eva Wilson
Eva Wilson demonsrates that a limited number of decorative ideas have recurred in many cultures and periods across the world, form prehistory to the present day, repeatedly reinvented in different forms. With the accumulated experience and accuracy of the archaeological illustrator, she approaches the question why some patterns and motifs become universally popular, and attempts some answers. Her drawings make this book a valuable source of reference and inspiration for designers, artists and historians.
Eva Wilson FSA studied sculpture and pottery in Stockholm and worked as a potter in Denmark after the Second World War. She later trained as an archaeological illustrator and, after moving to England, worked extensively illustrating both popular and academic publications. Married to Sir David Wilson (Director of The British Museum 1976-91), she is the author of five books in The British Museum Pattern Book series.
