The ABC of Horse and Pony Problems by Patricia Knowles
Since she was twelve years old, Josephine Knowles has ridden, worked and competed with horses and ponies, many of them being other people's problem animals. This wealth of experience is concentrated in this the most comprehensive guide to the subject ever written. Bad manners are covered in depth but 'problem' is not always synonymous with 'ill-mannered'. There are detailed chapters on problems either stemming from or relating to: ailments, lameness; saddlery; riding; training; loading; travelling, and problems peculiar to the field-kept or stabled horse. Valuable advice is given on assessing a rider's limitations and how they affect the horse, and buying a suitable mount. A stable companion of "ABC of Breaking and Schooling Horses", this common-sense approach top all equine problems will save the average horse owner much time and heartache and will result in horses and ponies that are well-balanced and happy. The book is complemented by the author's own photographs and profuse, clear-line illustrations by Ejnar Newcome-Baker.
Josephine Knowles was two years old when she was given her first pony in 1931. She was breaking and schooling ponies, usually purchased after much haggling from rag and bone merchants in her native Lancashire, by the time she was twelve. Soon she was training difficult animals for others and when she had passed her Pony Club tests with the Holcombe Harriers branch, she became a Pony Club instructor. Several jobs followed including working for a hunt, a livery and dealing yard, a girl's school where riding was part of the curriculum and an eventing establishment. During this time Josephine competed successfully in some of the first Horse Trials in Great Britain on two horses given to her as rejects. BHS examinations followed and. After gaining her BHSI, she opened her own riding school. She gained her Fellowship very largely on her experience of so many different aspects of horsemanship and the great number of animals she has ridden and dealt with. Josephine lives in Northamptonshire where she is still competing and judging; she teaches, gives demonstrations and lectures and has gained an enviable reputation for her work with young equines. Josephine Knowles is also the author of ABC of Breaking and Schooling Horses.
