Abraham Joshua Heschel by Edward K Kaplan
This is the first volume in a two-volume biography of Heschel. Based on interviews with Heschel's family and friends, archival documents and Heschel's writings in Yiddish, German and Hebrew, the book traces Heschel's life from his birth in Warsaw in 1907 to his emigration to the US in 1940.Edward K. Kaplan is Kevy and Hortense Kaiserman Professor in the Humanities at Brandeis University where he teaches courses in French, comparative literature, and religious studies. He has been writing on Heschel for many years, and his publications include Holiness in Words: A. J. Heschel's Poetics of Piety. He lives in West Newton, MA.
