Acute Medicine by Christopher Ball

A handbook of evidence based management of acute medical problems.

This new book has been "put together" by two doctors who worked with David Sackett in Oxford, and are based at his former department, the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine. Whereas Sackett's book, Evidence Based Medicine, dealt with the theory of how to apply EBM, this new book is an instant reference handbook offering a guide to the evidence based management of major medical problems, and is intended for use by junior doctors or residents.

Each topic covered is the result of a rigorous process of analysis of the available journal articles on the subject, conducted according to the accepted EBM methodology established by Sackett and co-workers. Each topic has been checked by a recognised expert in the field, and reviewed by doctors at centres of excellence in the UK and North America.
  • A handbook of evidence-based management of acute medical problems - unlike most of the competition, it is truly evidence-based in that its recommendations are based on a rigorous process of search and appraisal.
  • Each medical problem is covered under standardised headings for easy access - clinical findings, differential diagnosis, therapy etc.
  • Management recommendations are expressed as brief bullet points - easy to skim through to find out what is best practice for a particular acute medical condition.
  • Boxes beside the management recommendations give the evidence behind each recommendation.
  • Accessible layout means that the book can be used on two levels - quick reference for information on diagnosis or treatment, and then a more leisured study of the evidence later when time permits.
  • Handy fold-out flaps on the cover give definitions of essential EBM terms and an explanation of the grading system used to indicate the weight of evidence behind each recommendation.
