Formative assessment is one of the best ways to increase student learning and enhance teacher quality. But effective formative assessment is not part of most classrooms. Connie Moss and Susan Brookhart define formative assessment as an active, continual process in which teachers and students work together to gather evidence of learning.Susan M.Brookhart, Ph.D., is a Helena, Montana-based independent educational consultant and author. Dr. Brookhart's research interests include the importance of formative and summative classroom assessment in student motivation and accomplishment, as well as the relationship between classroom and large-scale assessment and grading. She edited Educational Measuring: Problems and Practice, a magazine published by the National Council on Measurement in Education, from 2007 to 2009. She has written or co-written 16 books and over 60 papers and book chapters on classroom assessment, teacher professional development, and evaluation. She sits on the editorial boards of a number of publications.
Dr. Brookhart earned her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. After teaching in both elementary and middle schools, she earned a master's degree in educational research and evaluation from The Ohio State University. She was a full-time academic member at Duquesne University, where she most recently served as Professor and Chair of the Educational Foundations and Leadership Department. She is currently employed as a Research and Professional Development Consultant in the Duquesne University School of Education's Center for Advancing the Study of Teaching and Learning.
