Canada, like other countries, is aging. The media has reported on a "grey tsunami," a demographic change reflecting longer life expectancy and the retirement of the so-called baby boomer generation. The numbers and percentages of older adults within our population continue to increase. In 2010, 15.3 percent of Canada's population was over 65; in 2030, it will be 24.1 percent. Neena L. Chappell is professor of sociology at the University of Victoria. She has served as president of the Canadian Association on Gerontology (2008-2012) and is president of Academy II (Social Sciences) of the Royal Society of Canada, 2011-13. Marcus J. Hollander is president of Hollander Analytical Services Ltd. He has over 30 years of experience in health services research, evaluation, and administration, including working as director of the health network of the Canadian Policy Research Networks.
