He earned his bachelor's degree from Meiji Gakuin University in 1976, was named master of the Aikido World Headquarters in 1986, and was named chairman of the Aikikai Foundation in 1996. With his father's death in 1999, he became Aikido Doshu and the permanent chairman of the World Aikido Federation. He is a trustee of the Nippon Budokan, a martial arts facility in central Tokyo, and holds various prominent positions in the martial arts.
