Sakurai made his independent publishing debut in 2010 with the release of a short story collection with Issuisha. In 2012, he would collaborate with Kodansha on his first feature-length series, Demi-human. In 2013, Japanese comic editors and mangaka chose AJIN as the third best manga of the year.
