Lewis Carroll (1832-98) was the pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who taught mathematics at Christ Church College, Oxford. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland grew from a tale he told eleven-year-old Alice Liddell and a true heroine was born - spirited and resourceful in the face of confusion.

Helen Oxenbury is one of today's foremost illustrators and has won many awards including the Kate Greenaway twice - in 1969 for The Quangle Wangle's Hat and The Dragon of an Ordinary Family and again in 1999 for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. She has also won the Smarties Book Prize three times for Farmer Duck, We're Going on a Bear Hunt and So Much.
