Alistair Cooke, for 52 years the unmistakable voice of BBC's "Letter from America", was 90 in 1998. Drawing upon correspondence, private papers and the reminiscences of family and friends, this is the biography of one the most famous names in British broadcasting history.
Nick Clarke read Modern Languages at Cambridge and after three years with the Yorkshire Post joined the BBC TV News in Manchester as a reporter in 1973. He spent five years on The Money Programme, three years on Newsnight and has been a presenter with BBC Radio 4 since 1989, initially with The World This Weekend, moving in 1994 to The World at One. He also presents Radio 4's Round Britain quiz and is a regular guest panellist on The News Quiz.
