Michael Patrick MacDonald grew up at the Old Colony housing community in South Boston. He became a renowned Boston activist after losing four siblings and watching his generation ravaged by poverty, crime, and addiction. He helped create various antiviolence efforts, including gun-buyback programs. MacDonald won the American Book Award in 2000 and has written numerous essays for the Boston Globe Op-Ed Page. He continues to work for social change around the country, engaging with survivor families and young people. All Souls, his national bestseller, and Easter Rising: A Memoir of Roots and Rebellion, his follow-up, have been embraced by university curricula across the country.
