From a humble start in life in June 1925 in the Lanarkshire village of Craigneuk, he rose through the ranks to become the leader of Scotland's 750,000 Roman Catholics. As a vibrant pastor committed to many causes, Tom Winning dedicated his career to improving the life of every Scot. He was widely regarded as a giant among church leaders and the voice of Christianity in Scotland. He may in time be remembered as one of Lanarkshire's greatest sons, but the title of 'the cardinal with the common touch' is his and his alone. This was fully underlined in November 1994 when an estimated 5,000 people from all over Scotland made their way to Rome to pay tribute to the one-time Scottish parish priest who became only the third Scottish cardinal in history. This volume pays tribute to the irrepressible Tom Winning and celebrates his warmth and humour. Illustrated by a huge portfolio of previously unpublished photographs, candid and otherwise, it is hoped that this book will prove that at both a personal level and in informal situations here was a man who was always Winning...and he is quite irreplaceable.
Fraser Elder was a close personal friend of Cardinal Winning. He is a renowned journalist and writer and is the author of a number of books and publications across a range of subjects including sport, biographies and political history. George Wilkie is an award-winning photographer and picture editor, who has worked for the Daily Mail, the Evening Times and the Glasgow Herald. He has now returned to his first love, photography, working for Photonews Scotland Ltd. Martin Gilfeather has been a picture editor for numerous national newspapers including the Daily Express and the Sun. He founded Anglia Press Agency, which is one of the country's top picture agencies and he now heads Photonews Scotland Ltd.
