The Analects of Confucius by The Arthur Waley Estate
First published in 1938. Previous translations of the Analects of Confucius are based upon a medieval interpretation which reflects the philosophy of the 12th century A.D rather than of the 5th century B.C., when Confucius lived. This book detaches the Analects from the Scholastic interpretation and lets these famous sayings speak for themselves.'What we have here is the original classic, re-edited, a job of the highest critical value..' -Time and Tide
After being appointed Assistant Keeper of Oriental Prints and Manuscripts at the British Museum, Arthur Waley (1889-1966) learned himself Chinese and Japanese in order to help categorize the museum's collection of artworks. He went on to become one of the most well-known translators of Asian classics into English throughout his lifetime. The Tale of Genji, Monkey (The Trip to the West), The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon, and The Analects of Confucius are among the books he has translated.
