Ancestral Machines by Michael Cobley
The Warcage is a feat of unprecedented stellar engineering: two hundred worlds harnessed to an artificial sun. Built to travel through space as a monument to peace between alien species, its voracious rulers have turned it into a nightmarish wasteland, capturing new planets for slaves and resources, then discarding the old. Now, when a verdant agri-world is pulled out of its orbit and a deal goes bad, it is up to the captain of a smuggling ship to journey into the Warcage and rescue his crew.
Proper galaxy-spanning space opera - Iain MBanks on SEEDS OF EARTHA convincing portrayal of political machinations and the plight of individuals caught up in events beyond their comprehension - GUARDIAN on SEEDS OF EARTHA very entertaining read . . . the series as a whole possesses tremendous potential - FANTASY BOOK CRITIC on SEEDS OF EARTHThe sort of thing that space opera readers love. We've got spaceships and a broad history, shown through the viewpoints of multi-person perspectives, linked together in a way that Heinlein would've been proud of - SFFWORLD on SEEDS OF EARTH
