As Angela Jackson has developed as a poet, her poetry has engaged various artistic perspectives yet always maintains a characteristic combination of compassion, grace, and daring. She has won the Pushcart Prize and the Shelley Memorial Award from the Poetry Society of America, as well as fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Illinois Arts Council for both fiction and poetry. Her debut novel, Where I Must Go, won the American Book Award, and her poetry collection, All These Paths Be Luminous, was nominated for the National Book Award. Jackson has written three other plays in addition to Comfort Stew: Witness!
