Frank McCourt (1930-2009) was born to Irish immigrant parents in Brooklyn, New York, grew up in Limerick, Ireland, and returned to the United States in 1949. He was a high school teacher in New York City for thirty years. Angela's Ashes, his debut novel, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Los Angeles Times Book Award. He received the coveted Ellis Island Family Legacy Award for Outstanding Contribution in the Field of the Arts in 2006, as well as the United Union of Teachers John Dewey Award for Achievement in Teaching in 2007.
