Anglo-Saxon Riddles by John Porter

A book full of ingenious characters who speak their names in riddles-a bookworm, an iceberg, an oyster, the sun and moon and a one-eyed garlic seller are just a few that bear witness to the every-day life and imagination of the Anglo-Saxons. Their sense of the awesome power of creation goes hand in hand with a frank delight in obscenity, a fascination with disguise and with the mysterious processes by which the natural world is yurned to human use. Contains all 95 Exeter Book riddles.

John Porter was born in Massachusetts and began climbing when he was 12 years old, learning the ropes in the White Mountains, Rockies, Cascades, and Yosemite. He relocated to the United Kingdom. He moved to Leeds University in the early 1970s to pursue postgraduate work, where he joined a group of climbers dedicated to clean ethics, alpine-style, and the development of international partnerships. In the middle of the Cold War, Alex MacIntyre and Polish friends ascended the north face of Koh-i-Bandaka (1977) and the south face of Changabang (1978). Other important climbs spanning a 55-year period include lightweight attempts on Everest's west ridge in winter, K2's northwest ridge, Sepu Kangri's east face, first ascents of Chong Kundam I and V in the Eastern Karakoram, and many other notable climbs around the world.

With Brian Hall and Jim Curran, he launched the Kendal Mountain Festival in 1980, and in 2011, he and Brian founded the adventure-film website SteepEdge.com. John is a vice president of the Alpine Club and has previously served as the British Mountaineering Council's vice president and the Mountain Heritage Trust's secretary. He lives in the Cumbrian Lake Region in the United Kingdom.
