The Anthropology of Religion by Fiona Bowie

We undertook extensive research into the second edition of this volume. A number of adopters were questionnaired, half of them in the UK, and other half in the US. As a result of this questionnairing it became apparent that the following changes should be made to the book: a chapter added on mythology - this was requested by both US and UK, and anthropology and religious studies lecturers. In addition, the following topics will be added to the book: pilgrimage, spirit possession and cargo cults. These need not have whole chapters but will be inserted into the existing structure. At the same time, we will up-date the design, add a small number of illustrations, and provide a rather more attactive cover.Other than this, everyone was very happy with the volume. These are some of the comments: "I think it is a terrific text". "I am extremely impressed with the work as it is, but I would voice my interest in seeing a good chapter on myth." "Good survey of all methodologies appropriate to the academic study of religion". "As far as the content of the text goes, I have only praise for this text. Her treatment of the Rom peoples is first rate and is a wonderful test case. Her insertion of brief "portraits" of individuals who contributed to the anthropology of religion is invaluable. It puts anthropology right where it should be - as a discipline which itself has a story/history and so can be contextualized." "It is an excellent book and I'm sure the revision will keep it excellent. It serves very well to introduce the Anthropology of Religion, and is excellent for first view of significant issues (e.g. shamans and witches)." "As an undergraduate text this is clearly written and very straightforward".
