An Architectural History of Harford County, Maryland by Christopher Weeks

This work examines the range of architectural styles in Harford County - from early colonial folk styles to Bauhaus modernism. Between these extremes, it takes in Palladian mansions, Gothic revival churches, "romantic" stone cottages of the mid-19th century, and Belle Epoch mansions of the wealthy. There is also coverage of the county's industrial heritage, including quarries in Cardiff and Whiteford, 19th-century canning establishments in Lapidum, and early 19th-century gristmills. In addition, there is an introduction to some of Harford's most interesting citizens, such as baseball magnate Larry MacPhail and topiary artist Harvey Ladew.
"'Epic' is the word for the impressive work on Harford countyIt has the rare quality of being both edifying and entertaining, its author being an experienced architectural writer as well as a native of the county. The book is divided into two sections. [The] second part of the work is a thorough and scholarly description of the surprisingly numerous buildings of importance still standing in Harford County...The first part...is an unexpected and intriguing social history of the county brought vivdly to life by detailed descriptions of peoples and events that only a writer with an intimate connection to the subject would be able to extricate from sources...The author's rare knowledge, wit, spicy tidbits of scandal, and 'let me entertain you' approach to history makes this a must-read for anyone interested in Maryland history."--'Maryland Historical Magazine'
