Arsene Lupin, Gentleman Thief by Maurice Leblanc

In 1907, Author Maurice Leblanc released the first collection of stories recounting the adventures of Arsene Lupin, a charming thief and master of disguises. The character became quite popular, featured in 17 novels and 39 novellas, inspiring generations of charming anti-heroes to follow. This brand new edition of the first Arsene Lupin novel is beautifully illustrated by artist Vincent Mallie, capturing the joyful style of an animated feature as if created by renowned director Hayao Miyazaki (whose first directorial release was LUPIN THE 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro, which is filled with nods to Leblanc's classic character). Collecting the first 9 novellas, this illustrated edition features dozens of black-and-white and full-color illustrations and plates including numerous two-page spreads that evoke the beauty and charm of a Studio Ghibli production.

Maurice Marie Émile Leblanc (1864 – 1941) was a French author and short story writer best known for creating Arsène Lupin, the fictitious gentleman thief and detective often compared to Arthur Conan Doyle's creation Sherlock Holmes. When the first Arsène Lupin story appeared in a series of short stories serialized in the journal Je Sais Tout, commencing in No. 1, Leblanc was mainly considered little more than a writer of short stories for various French periodicals. 6, dated July 15, 1905. The roguish and glamorous Lupin was a surprise hit, and Leblanc's fame and wealth beckoned. Obviously constructed at editorial request under the influence of and in reaction to the hugely famous Sherlock Holmes stories, the roguish and glamorous Lupin was a surprise success, and Leblanc's fame and fortune beckoned. Leblanc went on to write twenty-one Lupin novels and short story collections in total.
