Chapters examine poetic language, narrative and performance in conversation, and a range of written genres (from graffiti and text messages to online chat).
JANET MAYBIN and JOAN SWANN work in the Centre for Language and Communications at the Open University, UK, where they are responsible for the design and production of a range of open learning materials on aspects of English language studies. Janet Maybin also writes and researches on children's and adults' informal language and literacy practices and has written the forthcoming publication, Children's Voices: Talk, Language and Identity (Palgrave Macmillan, 2005). Joan Swann's main research interests are in sociolinguistics, particularly language and gender and language in education. She has recently published A Dictionary of Sociolinguistics with Ana Deumert, Theresa Lillis and Rajend Mesthrie (Edinburgh University Press, 2004).
