One of the most respected sf illustrators and artists at work, Vincent Di Fate began his professional career as a tv animator with Ralph Bakshi, publishing his first sf illustration - for Analog - in 1969; since then he has published countless further magazine illustrations and book covers. He was one of the NASA artists for the Appollo/Soyuz programme, and received a Hugo in 1979. He also writes on sf art in his long-running 'Sketches' column in Algol and SF Chronicle; and his hugely acclaimed book on sf art, Infinite Worlds (1997), was shortlisted for a Hugo.
Di Fate is currently President of the Society of Illustrators. He has published Di Fate's Catalog of Science Fiction Hardware (1980), with text by Ian Summers.
