MIKE RUTHERFORD began his career with Genesis as a bassist and backup vocalist. During the band's early years, he frequently played rhythm and 12-string guitar. Following Steve Hackett's departure in 1977, he took over as lead guitarist on the band's studio recordings. In Genesis, he is one of only two consistent members. In 1985, he also established Mike + The Mechanics.

As a member of Genesis, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. The Living Years is his first book.
