The Artist's Wife by Clare Flynn

July, 1914: In their sunlit Hampshire workshop, Alice Dalton mixes paints for the stained-glass artwork she and Edmund are working on, pausing only to joyfully cradle the soft swell of her stomach.

But the looming war threatens her hard-won happiness. When a knock at the door announces the arrival of Victor, her estranged brother, returning after six long years in America, her elation at being reunited is short-lived when he enlists and is sent to Gallipoli.

Then Alice begins to notice the impact the war is having on Edmund, too, as he tries to safeguard the world they've made for themselves. Every day he's torn between duty to his country, his moral compass and the desperate need to protect Alice from his powerful father, who could destroy their lives in an instant.

As the war gathers pace and threatens everything she holds dear, can Alice fight to hold onto love in a world torn apart by violence?

From the gilded world of high society London to the perilous battlefields of Gallipoli, The Artist's Wife is an utterly gripping and richly evocative story of an Edwardian family fractured by war, betrayal and heartbreak. Perfect for fans of The Venice Sketchbook and The Nightingale.

Flynn, Clare: - Clare Flynn writes historical fiction with a strong sense of time and place and compelling characters. Her books often deal with people who are displaced - forced out of their comfortable lives and familiar surroundings. She is a graduate of Manchester University where she read English Language and Literature. After a career in international marketing, working on brands from nappies to tinned tuna and living in Paris, Milan, Brussels and Sydney, she ran her own consulting business for 15 years and now lives in Eastbourne where she can look out of her window and see the sea. When not writing and reading, Clare loves to paint with watercolours and grabs any available opportunity to travel - sometimes under the guise of research. Her website is at www.clareflynn.co.uk
