Fun and fascinating science is everywhere, and its a cinch to learnjust ask a science teacher!Larry Scheckel grew up as one of nine children on a family farm in the hill hills of southern Wisconsin. He went to a one-room country school for eight years, four years of high school, a stint in the military, training in electronics as a TV broadcast engineer, getting married, going to college, and beginning his teaching career. That career spanned 38 years, during which time he taught physics and aerospace science to approximately 4,000 high school students in Tomah, Wisconsin. Larry Scheckel has been selected Tomah Teacher of the Year three times, as well as a state Presidential Awardee for the past six years. The Tandy Award, Kohl Award, Wisconsin Physics Teacher Award, Health Physics Society Award, Ron Gibbs Award, and Excellence in Science Teaching Award have all been bestowed upon him.
Larry Scheckel has written articles for the magazines The Science Teacher and The Physics Teacher. He has coached Science Olympiad teams, mentored robotics teams, planned field trips and stargazing sessions, and flown students on orientation flights. Larry has presented his knowledge to teachers at National Science Teacher Association conventions, Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers summer programs, and other events. Thousands of adults and students have heard him speak at places including Children's Museums, Boys and Girls Clubs, Rotary, and conventions.
Larry enjoys biking in the Driftless region of south central Wisconsin, jogging on back roads, flying a Cessna 150 over the lush countryside, doing crossword puzzles, reading newspapers, historical books, and trade publications, and flying radio controlled planes. Ask Your Science Teacher and Ask A Science Teacher are two books written by Larry. Larry and his wife, Ann, live in Tomah, Wisconsin, and are both retired teachers. Paul, Daniel, and Patrick, their three grown sons, have a lovely daughter-in-law, Dana, and two wonderful grandchildren, Teddy and Marit.
