The Atlantic Job - A Dad and a Lad by Norman Beech

After two years of preparation and training, Norman Beech and his son James became the first British father and son team to row across the Atlantic in an incredible 3,000 mile rowing challenge, that took them from Tenerife to Antigua in a 24 foot rowing boat across the second largest piece of water on earth. In the 82 day row, which also saw James celebrate his 19th birthday and become the youngest man to row across the Atlantic, the Beech Boys kept an online blog and a ship's log to record every second of their adventure. The memories of their voyage tell the lows of the trip, but also the highs of being followed by whales and dolphins, the fun, humour and of course the close bond of their father and son relationship. Packed with photographs of their time at sea, it is a story of adventure and committment. However, they had a big reason behind their adventure. With Norman's dreams including helping to equip other people and leaving a lasting impact, he decided that he would row the Atlantic with James in aid of WaterAid, a charity which enables the world's poorest people to gain access to safe water, sanitation and hygeine education. The proceeds of their book will go to support WaterAid's work.
"It is inspirational, fun and true!" "No matter how much time you spend on a rowing machine, the real test is how you cope with being on the open water for the couple of months it is going to take" North West Evening Mail
Norman and James Beech are from Coniston, Cumbria. Growing up by the sea in Swanage, Dorset, Norman's first experience with the sea was a blue canvas lilo. This over time turned into a plastic rowing boat, until he learnt to sail with Swanage Sailing Club. James inherited his father's love of the water and, from the tender age of five years old, would row with his father on Coniston Waters in Cumbria. This lead to their big experience of crossing the Atlantic ocean.
