Atlantis by Christina Balit

Floating on the emerald seas is a small rocky island belonging to the mighty sea-god Poseidon. Gradually he transforms the island into a rich and fertile place with underground canals, a race course, a silver-pinnacled temple and a palace fit for a god. But as the golden years pass, his descendants start to act less like gods and more like men...This retelling, based on Plato's Timaeus and Critias, with a note on Atlantis by Geoffrey Ashe, echoes one of the most haunting themes of humankind. Nominated for the Kate Greenaway Medal 1999
CHRISTINA BALIT studied at Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College of Art. In 1982 she won a Thames Television Travelling Design Bursary and illustrated Report to Greco by Niko Kazantisakis. She has exhibited widely and is also a playwright.
