Geboren on November 11, 1821 in Moskau, died on February 9, 1881 in Petersburg. Dostojewski was the son of an armenarzte and attended the Petersburger Militarakademie's Ingenieurschule from 1838 to 1843. He was previously employed at the Ingenieur-Department for Festungsbau. From 1845 forward, he devoted himself entirely to the profession of scribe. He was imprisoned and sentenced to death in 1849 as a result of his participation in a revolutionary zirkel.

He was sentenced to solitary confinement and military service in Sibirien without warning prior to his incarceration. He returned to Petersburg in 1859. He traveled to Germany, France, England, and Italy in 1862-63 and 1867-71, respectively.
