McDermid originally got her Australian Shepherds in 1980, and she's been loyal to the breed ever since. She produced several champions, obedience, herding, and agility named dogs under the kennel name Bainbridge. There were two superstars among those lovely and brilliant Aussies: CH Steal The Show of Bainbridge, Best of Breed winner at the 1986 Australian Shepherd Club of America National Specialty, and CH Steal The Show of Bainbridge, Best of Breed winner at the 1986 Australian Shepherd Club of America National Specialty. McDermid was a member of the United States Australian Shepherd Association's (USASA) Board of Directors for nine years. Vice President, Director, Newsletter Editor, and Head of the Health and Genetics Committee (H&G) were among her titles. Her greatest accomplishment as H&G Chairwoman was the promotion of Australian Shepherd genetic health diagnostics. She was the driving force behind the founding of Australia's first epilepsy research program in 2007.

McDermid oversaw the growth of genetic health testing at the USASA National Specialty from 2007 to 2011, making it an annual event. McDermid has been a Senior Breeder Judge since 1986, when he began judging Australian Shepherds at ASCA specialty events. The American Kennel Club accepted her as the second Australian Shepherd Breeder-Judge in 1995. In the United States, she judges AKC and ASCA competitions, as well as FCI Australian Shepherd specialty shows in Europe.
