The Autism FAQ by Joe Biel
If you're an autistic adult, there probably hasn't been a whole lot of guidance or community for you past the age of 18. Joe Biel writes about what it's like to be autistic. Dr. Faith writes about what it's like to care for autistic folks, based on her experience as a parent, friend, and therapist. The zine covers diagnostic criteria and how they play out in practice, what it means for autism to be a disability, and co-occurring symptoms, like depression and anxiety, and life skills and social skills that a neurotypical world doesn't always think to teach autistic people.Joe Biel is a self-made publisher and filmmaker who leans on punk rock for his inspiration, methods, and beginnings. He is the co-founder of the Portland Zine Symposium and the founder/manager of Microcosm Publications. He has been featured in Time Magazine, Publisher's Weekly, Utne Reader, Portland Mercury, Oregonian, Broken Pencil, Readymade, Punk Planet, Profane Existence, Spectator (Japan), G33K (Korea), and Maximum Rocknroll with his films on the Dinner and Bikes program. He is the author of several books, including Good Trouble: Creating a Successful Life and Business on the Spectrum, Manspressions: Interpreting Men's Conduct, The CIA Makes Science Fiction Unexciting, Beyond the Music, Bamboozled, Bipedal, By Pedal, and others. He is the filmmaker of the Groundswell film series including the documentaries Aftermass: Biking in a Post-Critical Mass Portland, If It Ain't Cheap, It Ain't Punk, Of Dice & Men, $100 & A T-Shirt.
